Electroencephalography (EEG)
The EEG measures brain waves by attaching small electrodes to the scalp with a special paste. A routine test lasts approximately 40 to 60 minutes. Prolonged studies of 24 to 72 hours are also available. There is no pain associated to this test, there may be some discomfort if the patient has a sensitive scalp. The EEG is performed by a specially trained technician and we follow ASET guidelines.
Preparing For the Test
Come to the test at least 15 minutes in advance to start your preparations. The hair and scalp should have been washed clean, dry and free of sprays, gels, or creams. Please wear your natural hair loose, no braids, wigs, weaves or any other hair attachments. Dress comfortably. The room temperature is kept at a comfortable 72 to 74 degrees, if you tend to feel cold easily dress warmly. It is NOT necessary to stop any medications, be fasting, or be sleep deprived unless the doctor tells you differently.

Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG & NCS)
Electromyography records muscle activity by inserting a needle electrode in the muscle. The test may cause mild discomfort comparable to receiving an injection or vaccine. The needle electrode only records information it does not administer any substance or electric wave into the muscle. The EMG is essential for the accurate diagnosis of numerous neuromuscular disorders. Without this test the correct diagnosis is missed in many cases. NCS records nerve activity by applying an electrode to the skin in the arms, legs, or face. Tiny currents are administered with a probe to stimulate the nerve. This test may cause minimal to mild discomfort. NCS are essential complements to the EMG. In general both tests are very well tolerated and completed within 30 minutes without any residual problems.
How to Prepare for the Test
The skin should be clean without any creams, oils, or gels. Dress comfortably. Arrive on time. You will change into a special gown depending on the area of the study. You don't need to be fasting or skip medications. If you have tendency to bleed or bruise easily or other skin problems, discuss them with the doctor and the technician prior to the test.
