Dr. Maria C. Ramirez earned her bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico. She graduated cum laude and went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan. She served an internship at San Juan City Hospital as well as residencies in neurology at the University of Puerto Rico Neurology Department and Boston City Hospital. Dr. Ramirez performed a fellowship in behavioral neurology at Boston University Affiliated Hospitals, and an epilepsy mini-fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
As a neurologist, she is highly trained to treat disorders of the nervous system. This includes diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. Some of the more common problems that a neurologist will diagnose and treat are strokes, epilepsy (seizures), headaches, dementias (Alzheimer's disease), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and various forms of pain.
Dr. Ramirez is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Society of Neurorehabilitation.

Dr. Ramirez lectures locally and nationally on topics related to her specialty interests, including epilepsy and seizures, and head injury rehabilitation. Her publications include "Anticonvulsant Guidelines for the Head Injured Patient," and she is an active researcher and writer.
