The Early Years In Puerto Rico
Dr Ramirez is proud to say that she comes from the lovely island of Puerto Rico. Native of San Juan she grew up in a large loving family. She attended the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico where she graduated Cum Laude with Bachelors of Science in Chemistry Degree. She continued on to pursue her medical doctor degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, graduating in 1985. In 2010 it will be the Silver Anniversary of her Medical School Class. She completed a general medical internship at the San Juan City Hospital, followed by a one year training in Neurology at the UPR Department of Neurology Affiliated Hospitals (San Juan City Hospital, San Juan Veterans Administration Hospital, and University District Hospital. This broad exposure to patients of different ages and socioeconomic levels, built a strong base for her further training in Neurology.

In July 1987, Dr Ramirez joined the Neurology Residency Program at Boston City Hospital.Thru the next 2 years she rotated thru Boston City Hospital, New England Deaconess Hospital and Lahey Clinic. The program was directed by Dr. Thomas D Sabin, a renown expert in Neurology. She also received instruction from prominent leaders in the Neurology field including Dr Martin Samuels, Dr Thomas Kemper, and Dr Nagagopal Venna. She completed her Neurology residency in 1989 and subsequently joined the Behavioral Neurology Subspecialty Fellowship of Boston University under the direction of Dr Martin Albert, a well published author in the subject. She treasures the years she spent in Boston and the many excellent professors than she came to know and to learn from. Notwithstanding the wonderful educational environment in Boston, being from a tropical island, she was ready to move to warmer climates by the end of her fellowship in 1990.

California and Rancho Los Amigos
By Fall 1990, Dr Ramirez accepted a position as staff neurologist in Bakersfield, CA. One year letter she was offered a position in Los Angeles, California at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. By November 1991 she joined the staff of Rancho Los Amigos Hospital which is now known as Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (RLANRC). It was there that Dr. Ramirez gained wide exposure to Neurological Rehabilitation especially in the areas on Brain injury, Stroke, and Spinal Cord. At Rancho los Amigos she served in the Brain Injury Department, and rotated as neurological consultant for the rest of the hospital including the stroke and spinal cord units. During her two and a half years at RLANRC she worked with other neurologists and rehabilitation specialists who became her mentors; particularly Dr. Helena Chang Chui and Dr. Lance Stone. Doctor Ramirez also enjoyed working with students, residents and fellows that rotated thru RLANRC and she served briefly as Assistant Clinical Professor for the Neurology Department of the University of Southern California. The experience obtained during those years prepared Doctor Ramirez for the diversity and complexity of patients she would see over the next several years in private practice.
